I was very aware of the fact that I was a white woman stepping into a space created to represent POCs and I worked very hard to make sure that the costumes were done correctly and respectfully. I did extensive research into the history and culture of the French Antilles as well as researched other productions of the show throughout its history. I collaborated with the performers throughout the whole process to make sure they felt that their costumes were not only functional but truly reflected the characters they were creating. They were given complete autonomy over their hairstyles and I made myself available for support, advice, suggestions, or a styled wig if they chose.
